After 4 years of service in the US Navy, I acquired a BA in Communications from a small state college in Western Massachusetts. The degree gave me the privilege of selling my soul for the first job that came along; producing television commercials for small market advertisers.
After a while that job yielded an opportunity to become head honcho and marketing producer for the region; overseeing news, sports and mobile television production as well as being assigned the task of ‘making money’ by creating an advertising channel for local cable stations.
Noticing that many of my cohorts did not work as hard nor have as much ambition as I did, I quit the job, packed my van, moved to Los Angeles and spent the next several years chasing windmills in the film industry. This was my first exposure to a freelance lifestyle and those were some lean years where my dog and me survived on top ramen and bean burritos for days at a time.
Then a friend approached me and offered an opportunity to help him build his advertising agency. This gave me a chance to work from home, stop the continuous job hunting cycle and to make as much money as I possibly could. This took my entrepreneurship to a whole new level. I enjoyed working at home in my loft apartment, going to the beach in the middle of the day and being able to come and go as I pleased with the freedom of building my business close at hand with a laptop and cell phone.
Then the day came when my friend sold the business I helped him build and I was left wondering what to do next. I quickly realized I was ‘terminally unemployable.’ I was spoiled by the freedom and lifestyle of working from home and there was no looking back. With some money in the bank and a new pair of flip-flops on my feet.. I embarked on a search for a business I could work from home. And if you haven’t noticed by now.. there are LOADS of opportunities out there. Most are legitimate.. and a few are sketchy. So I found out.
So for me to make a decision.. I did some basic research on trends in the global marketplace and all signs pointed to the Baby Boomers. As with everything else this massive demographic has ever touched.. the Boomers were/are heading into a new phase in life and that means a shift in their buying habits. Any 5th grader can see that if you get in front of the next Boomer buying trend.. you can become massively wealthy by servicing their needs.
So what’s ONE thing that most people with time and money freedom want to do? Travel! And even if their 401K is now a 201K they still want to spend time with the kids and grandkids and see the world. That won’t change. So what’s the solution? Offer Boomers a new way to travel that is hassle free, with a greatly reduced price and also give them the opportunity to make money and travel for free! Brilliant. And FYI… I’m not talking about one of those skeezy card mill or time share deals.. I’m talking about the real thing. A legitimate game changing idea in the travel industry. So I jumped in.. and two years and 12 vacations later.. I am more convinced than ever before that I made the right choice.
